Too big, too strong, too fast, too good!

For many fans of the NBA, Derrick Rose, 30, underwent a comeback season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, averaging 18.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 0.6 steals per game, on 48.2% from the field. Rose also surprised many fans and critics alike with his improved three point shooting, shooting a career-high 37.0% from beyond the arc. In fact, he started out the season shooting at an elite, above 40% clip before his eventual elbow injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season. This article will take a look back at Pooh’s best games of the season.

Honorable Mention: MIN vs DET – 33 points (14-29 FG, 1-4 3PT), 3 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal

In this overtime thriller, Rose played a pretty good game as he continued to hit tough shots against the Pistons’ defense. The Timberwolves ended up losing the game by 6 points as Rose didn’t play particularly well in overtime. Still, Rose hit a bunch of clutch shots in the fourth quarter, which is good enough to get this game ranked as an honorable mention in my list.

5. MIN vs DAL – 28 points (11-21 FG, 2-5 3PT), 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 1 block

This game took place in one of the first few games of the season and it put Rose back into the spotlight. The 2017-18 NBA Season saw Rose at the lowest point of his career. Rose signed with the Cavaliers on a minimum contract, dealt with injuries, was traded to the Jazz, and was waived by the Jazz. He later had a resurgence in the playoffs, playing for the Timberwolves, but there weren’t a lot of fans who took note of this. While the Timberwolves ended up losing the game, Rose surely proved that he could be among the NBA’s elites.

4. MIN vs CHI – 24 points (11-19 FG, 1-5 3PT), 3 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals

This game was Rose’s homecoming to Chicago and the United Center. The Timberwolves may have won the game, but the fans enjoyed every second of his performance. He impressed many with his acrobatic layups and difficult fade-aways, and even received MVP chants at the free throw line. His relationship with the Bulls’ front office and fans isn’t the best, but the youngest MVP in NBA history will always be a Bulls legend.

3. MIN vs PHO – 33 points (12-24 FG, 0-4 3PT), 4 rebounds, 3 assists

Turn back the clock! Rose has had some clutch performances this season, but none were as clutch as this one. He only scored 2 points in the first half as the Timberwolves found themselves in a close game with the Suns. He later on went to score 31 points in the second half alone, including the game-winning shot over a defender. This game occurred during the Timberwolves’ last-minute playoff push and while they didn’t end up making the playoffs, it certainly gave Wolves fans something to be happy about.

2. MIN vs LAL – 31 points (11-17 FG, 7-9 3PT), 3 rebounds, 5 assists

Against LeBron James and the Lakers, Rose set a new career-high in three pointers made in a game with 7 triples, but it unfortunately wasn’t enough to secure the win. Rose was on fire the whole game, keeping the Timberwolves in a position to win the game. When it came down to the last possession, the three point attempt that would’ve been Rose’s 8th triple ended up missing after a contest from Tyson Chandler. There was a controversy regarding Rose getting fouled by Chandler on the shot, especially after other players have been given fouls for a similar scenario, but it was ultimately deemed a no-foul the day after.

1. MIN vs UTAH – 50 points (19-31 FG, 4-7 3PT), 4 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal, 1 block

Against the Utah Jazz, Rose put up one of the best, if not the best performance of his career. He started out the game on fire, but as the Wolves found themselves in a close game, Rose took over in the fourth quarter. He hit clutch shot after clutch shot, as he kept pushing the Timberwolves closer to victory. Rose was able to hit tough jumpers and even drive to the rim against the Jazz’s tough defense. The final minute of the game ended with Rose sinking 2 free throws, giving him 50 points, and Rose blocking a potential game-tying three pointer from Dante Exum. Tears emerged from Rose’s eyes as teammates celebrated this insane performance, as D-Rose’s memorable night concluded.
