The Grind Session is an amazing collection of top high school basketball teams, and with the upcoming grind session finals coming up in just a couple of weeks we will highlight the top contenders to watch out for in the event.
Let me be VERY clear… I have not and will not EVER avoid competition. My understanding is that Hillcrest Prep is a VERY strong opponent, so I look forward to seeing them at the Grind Session World Championships in 2 weeks! #TheSPIREway #GoFURTHER 🎈— Justin Brantley (@JustinWBrantley) February 23, 2019
Unfortunately, Hillcrest Prep is not one of the teams we will see at the grind session championships as they are not playing in the Grind Session, but there are still some top teams to look out for.
Prolific Prep as we know, are the only team who have been able to defeat Spire Academy all season, which shows just how good this team really is. On the season, Prolific Prep stand at a record of 24-6 according to Maxpreps.com.
The best player on this team is certainly Nimari Burnett, who is showing an all around star type nature, that compares to the way Demar Derozan plays.
Nimari Burnett: 21.4 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 4.9 APG
This team is certainly one of the teams to watch, because not only did they beat Spire, they. have been great all season long, they have real chance to win the whole thing.
Spire Academy are most likely the favorite to win the Grind Session championship, they have 4 legitimate stars at the high school level in Lamelo Ball, Isaiah Jackson, and Myron Gardner. They have coasted through their entire schedule this season, losing just one game to Prolific Prep in January. Spire have proven time and again that they are nearly unrivaled against even the best Grind Session teams, but the question is, will that continue?
Lamelo Ball:22 PPG, 10.4 APG, 9.4 RPG
Rocket Watts: 24.1 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 6.1 APG
Spire have had a great season, but at any time it can all turn back on them, Lamelo Ball and all of his teammates will have to be at their best to beat some of the top teams they will have to play in the Grind Session finals.
Bella Vista have gotten a big boost in recent weeks with the addition of star Zion Harmon, who has become a co-star with Arizona commit Terry Armstrong. Together they have formed a back court to be feared.
Zion Harmon: 20.3 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 4.7 APG
Terry Armstrong: 19.1 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 2.9 APG
Zion Harmon is the 9th ranked player in the class of 2020, and Terry Armstrong is a slasher that will at the very least have a highly successful college career. The only problem for this team is that they haven’t had as much time to mesh, but they are easily one of the biggest threats to win it all.
In the end it should be a final between Prolific Prep and Spire Academy, and this would be a game that could go either way, but looking at the past Prolific Prep has the advantage, so they are my pre tournament pick. However, if either Spire or Bella Vista are able to go out and play their best brand of basketball, they have a very good chance to leave winners as well.
