Spire Academy were big winners against Downey Christian High School today by a score of 117-80, where the iconic match up between Lamelo Ball and Julian Newman finally went down. This was not even a match right from the beginning, as Spire started off way ahead, and did not take their foot off the gas peddle amounting to a 26 point lead at half time. Of course, Spire did not stop there, as they continued to disrespect Downey until the very end.

Each player for Spire played a great game today, including Myron Gardner who had his second straight 20 point performance for Spire with 27 today. Newman was completely outclassed today by Spire as his performance wasn’t close to matching any of Spire’s stars.

Lamelo Ball: A

Lamelo Ball obtained his 7th triple double of the season today, one short of an Ohio State record,  but not only that, he was able to give so many good looks to his teammates that I could have seen him finishing with 20 assists. Lamelo finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 assists which may not be his best stat line of the season, but it was extremely impressive. Today, Lamelo showed the difference between hype and skill.

Today showed just why Lamelo deserves to get offers from top division 1 schools, he played an unselfish game where he passed up good looks for great ones for both himself and his teammates. Lamelo is certainly going to be a lottery pick, and soon enough college teams will realize it.

We also have a play by play high light thread of Lamelo Ball’s 7th Triple Double of the season.

Julian Newman: D

Julian struggled to shoot the basketball all night, going a not so good 6-26 on the night. He took countless long threes that he would miss time after time. It really was not a good game from Newman where he was blocked twice by Lamelo Ball, and was held in check by the entire Spire team. Newman finished the game with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in a game he would like to forget.

Here we have play by play highlights of Julian Newman’s game today.

Rocket Watts: A

Rocket Watts had a 20 point performance today, with some crazy self dunks and good moves. He showed just why Michigan State have him committed, because he is one of the best guards in the country and will shine at the next level. His final stats were 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 12 assists, and he shined today in ways we haven’t seen before.

Isaiah Jackson: A-

Isaiah Jackson had a day on the defensive side of the ball, where he recorded 5 blocks and 3 steals on the night, again showing the capability he has on both ends of the floor. He is going to be a superstar in both college and the NBA. On the offensive end Jackson had 16 points and 11 rebounds in another great game for the 5 star recruit.

Unfortunately for fans of both teams, top guard Zion Harmon didn’t play, he could have made the game much closer for Downey, but in the end they were no match for Spire.
